coatings on iron and steel substrates.
Examples are: Paint, Epoxy, Zinc, Cadmium, Galvanizing, Metal spray,
Chrome, Powder Coating, Lacquer, Glass etc.
Non ferrous models identified (N) will measure all non conductive
non ferromagnetic coatings on a conductive non ferrous substrate.
Examples are: Paint, Anodising, Powder coating, Lacquer, Glass etc
on Aluminium, Brass, Copper and the non magnetic stainless alloys.
GENERAL
The Eban3000Mk2 is a modular instrument, which has been based upon
the successful Mk1 and has now an extensive range of features, which
will cater for virtually all aspects of measuring coating thickness.
As well as the flexibility of being able to choose which features
are installed at the time of purchase, there is the additional
security of being able to have fitted any feature in the range at
any time during the life of the instrument.
SUPPLIED EQUIPMENT
The Eban3000Mk2 is supplied complete with measuring probes, battery
fitted, set of precision measured calibration foils, zero reference
plates, carrying case.
INFORMATION
The Eban3000Mk2 is supplied with the battery fitted and has been
calibrated at the factory prior to despatch and should not normally
require calibrating prior to use.
DISPLAY
The Eban3000Mk2 has a two-line 16 character alphanumeric display.
This will assist in giving detailed information regarding the
particular function selected.
Generally the top line is the active reading line and the lower line
is the informative line.
When a request is made for operator action the display will remain
on the lower line until the action has been made.
When the information is purely informative, the information on the
lower line will appear momentarily for approx. 3 seconds.
OPERATION
To switch the Eban3000Mk2 on [press the ON keypad] there will be a
beep and the display will appear showing the CUSTOMER
PERSONALISATION NAME (if installed) for approx. 2 seconds then will
revert to displaying the last remembered reading.
Display will be as follows unless NON Ferrous was being used
previously.

The LAST REMEMBERED information line will appear momentarily for
approx 3 seconds.
To switch off [press the off keypad].
Note: There is an inbuilt protection against very quick or silly
number typing on the keypad. This protection will cause the
instrument to go into hold mode, thus preventing erroneous inputs.
To recover from this, switch the instrument off and then on again.
RESET
The RESET keypad will reset the instrument to a standard calibration
state in either F or N mode, dependent upon which is selected.
Note: Ensure that the RESET is carried out on both F and N if
applicable (on a dual F/N instrument) as a reset on F does not
affect the N and visa versa.
Previous operator ZERO and CAL calibration settings will be reset to
the factory calibration state.
Operator HI and LO limit settings if incorporated will be removed.
To RESET [press the RESET keypad], there will be a BEEP and the
display will show RESET and the display will revert from showing the
last remembered reading to showing 0000 reading.

TAKING MEASUREMENTS
The operator will have selected the appropriate F or N probe, or the
instrument will be ready to select it automatically if this feature
is installed.
The probe is placed down onto the coating, there will be a BEEP and
the Reading will be displayed on the display in either micron or
thou units.
This reading will be retained on the display until replaced by the
next reading.

To take the next reading lift the probe off the coating by more than
approx. 5mm, then place the probe down on the next coating location
to be measured.
AUTO F/N
This facility will automatically select the correct measurement mode
for the particular probe, which is taking readings.
If a dual F/N instrument is being used in the F mode for taking
measurements on steel and the N probe is then plugged in and used
(Note: the Eban3000Mk2 must be switched off when probes changed) the
Eban3000Mk2 will automatically close the current batch and ask for a
job number before changing to the N mode of operation.
This also applies if changing from N to F working.
In certain instances Batch Stored can be retained on the display and
will be removed when the next reading is taken.
SELF TESTING
The Eban3000Mk2 can be checked for correct operation at any time by
using the precision measured calibration foils and zero disk
supplied.
Simply place the foil on the smooth uncoated steel zero disk for
ferrous or use the uncoated aluminium zero disk for non-ferrous.
Place the measuring probe on the particular foil and ensure that the
measurement made by the Eban3000Mk2 is within the specification the
particular instrument version supplied.
Note: If after time the surface has become rusty or scratched or
pitted then the zero disk must be replaced.
It is recommended that the calibration foils be replaced on an
annual basis.
BATTERY LOW
The Eban3000Mk2 operates on a single 9 volt PP3 type battery
Note: the working life will be approximately 20+ hours for an
alkaline battery.
The Eban3000Mk2 will take measurements accurately until the battery
voltage reaches approx. 5.5 volt at which point a REPLACE BATTERY
message will be displayed.
No further readings can be taken until the instrument is switched
off and the battery replaced.
Note: All measurements taken and stored previous to this flashing
code are completely safe.
To replace the battery, remove the single screw on the rear
compartment and lift off the cover allowing access to the battery.
Replace the battery ensuring correct polarity and refit the cover.
Note: it is recommended that alkaline batteries be used, as these
are usually leak-proof guaranteed and have a high current capacity
for longer use.
Note: if a poor quality battery has been fitted then the discharge
time of this will be quicker and if this drops quickly to a low
voltage then spurious characters could appear on the display.

CALIBRATION
The Eban3000Mk2 is factory pre-set for measurements on flat smooth
steel for (F) instruments and aluminium for (N) instruments.
This is the calibration setting obtained after the Eban3000Mk2 has
been reset.
For measurements on different substrate shapes and surface finishes
Eban3000Mk2 has a variable calibration facility which will allow
precise measurements to be obtained on virtually all substrate
types.
ZERO
Place the probe on the uncoated substrate, the instrument will BEEP
and will display a reading. Whilst holding the probe firmly in place
depress the ZERO keypad.
The display will show flashing ZERO COMPLETED and the display will
continue to show the last reading taken.
The probe can now be lifted off the substrate.
Note no reading has been stored in memory.

CAL
Select a calibration foil close but higher than the coating
thickness value to be measured.
Place the probe on this selected foil. The instrument will BEEP and
display a reading.
If the displayed reading is outside the specification of the foil
value then depress the CAL keypad. There will be a BEEP and the
display will reset to 0000 and displays CALIBRATE and 4 digits of
either µm or mm dependent upon probe type selected.
The probe may now be lifted off the foil, as it does not have to be
held on after the display shows reading 0000 and CALIBRATE 0000µm.

BATCH OPERATION GENERAL
There is an option of standard multi-batch operation or
alternatively a fixed auto-batch, which will take an operator,
determined fixed quantity of readings and when these have been taken
will automatically fix a batch boundary and give the operator the
option of adding a job number (up to 12 digits).
The maximum number of readings that can be taken per batch is 99 and
the default batch quantity is 5.
Fixed Auto-Batch is selected by typing in the code of 244
Note: If a dual F/N instrument is being used in the F mode for
taking measurements on steel and the N probe is then plugged in and
used (the Eban3000Mk2 must be switched off when probes changed) the
Eban3000Mk2 will automatically close the current batch and ask for a
job number before changing to the N mode of operation.
This also applies if changing from N to F working.
MULTI-BATCH WORKING ( 9 enter )
The operator depresses the 9 keypad there will be a BEEP, then press
ENTER. The display will show the current batch sequential number and
ask to store batch by pressing enter.
If we do not want to store batch then we can exit by pressing clear
enter.

Note if the current batch of measurements is open i.e. not stored
with a job number, then the date and time (if set) printed out will
be the actual date and time of the printout. Only when the batch of
measurements is closed with a job number allocated will the actual
time of batch closing be stored with the batch.
MULTI-BATCH RECALL ( 241 )
This facility will allow any previous batch stored to be examined
for the statistics and also it is possible to add further readings
to this previous batch as well as storing again with a new job
number.
If the code of 241 is typed on the keypad then any previous batch
can be recalled by either JOB NUMBER or SEQUENCE NUMBER.
The operator types in the number 241 on the keypad, there will be a
BEEP on the first number and the following display will be shown.
This will show the current THIS BATCH sequential number and will ask
if FIND BATCH for another batch is required. If another batch is
required then by pressing enter, will bring up the display, which
will ask if batch is to be recalled by either sequence number or job
number
If another batch is not required, then pressing CLEAR ENTRY will
revert this display to normal reading mode.

INSTANT ( 235 )
The INSTANT feature automatically takes readings without the probe
having to be lifted off the substrate. A useful feature for taking
measurements in restricted locations.
This is available either in AUTO mode, where the Eban3000Mk2 takes
readings automatically approx every 3 seconds irrespective of probe
position.
Or in AUTOKEY mode where the reading is only taken every time the
enter key is pressed.
The operator types in the number 235 on the keypad, there will be a
BEEP on the first number.
The display will show

The display will then revert back to the standard previous display
at the next reading.
Note to stop the continuous readings in AUTO mode [press CLEAR ENTRY
for approx 4 seconds until a long beep occurs] or alternatively
switch the instrument off and then on again.
To exit from the AUTOKEY mode, switch the instrument off and then on
again.
PROFILE ( 7 enter )
This is a facility which will allow a special Zero calibration which
will assist in calibrating on Blast Cleaned surfaces and will also
allow a top coat to be measured in a multiple coating application.
Example if a coat of 25 microns has another coat of 50 microns
applied then the PROFILE feature will allow the operator to Zero the
Eban 3000Mk2 on the 25 micron coat and the Eban 3000Mk2 will then
measure the top coat only.
To use this facility, the operator first RESETS the instrument.
A reading is taken on the coating and the probe is held down onto
the coating.
The operator depresses the 7 keypad there will be a BEEP, then press
ENTER. The display will show the reading and PROFILE 0000.
